AbstractDebris flows are widely distributed in China. They frequently occur, seriously affecting the economic development and the safety of human lives and properties in mountainous areas. In the last 40 years, comprehensive investigations, observation, experiments, studies, detection, prediction and control of debris flows have been carried out in China for the development of a theoretic system of debris flows. So far, remarkable benefits have been acrueved in debris flow control. In some mountain areas, however, the growth of population and the economic development have done a severe damage to the ecological environment and intensified debris flow hazards. Thus, to effectively prevent and control debris flows and reduce their damage is an important task for safeguarding the sustainable economic development and the happy life of inhabitants in mountain areas of China.
