Other AbstractMagnitude-frequency relations are of the most importance in in the assessment of the debris flow. In this paper, employing numerous data of field survey and observation, we present these relations in terms of valley area, discharge, and runoff. Statistics on more than 5000 debris flow valleys shows that the area decreases in manner of the power form with exponent varying with the regions from east to west in China. That is, the frequency of debris flow decreases with the valley area increases in a power form. And observations of debris flows in Jiangjiagou allow a systematic survey of distribution of discharge and runoff. Results show that both these parameters are subject to the exponential distribution, with exponent varying with the events, which can be thought of as representing various processes of debris flow. These numerically determined relationships, although in statistic sense, might provide a quantitative reference to the assessment of debris flows.
