AbstractThe volume weight of viscous debris flows in Hunshui Gully is 1.87-2.24 t/m3, of which the gravel with a size>2mm makes up 50.5%. The probabilistic accumulation curve shows that in the flow the particles are not screened, and the flow moves as a whole. Sodium montmorillonite predominates in the clay component of the flow. The salt content both in the water of the ordinary flow and in the cleared water of the debris flow is relatively high. Thus, the physical properties of the debris flow are of high dispersion expansion, and thixotropy. It is seen from the rheologic curve of the slurry comprising coarse grain with a size<1mm that this slurry is pseudo-Bingham fluid, which properties are controlled by its volume weight, free porosity ratio, grain composition and clay content. Laboratory experoments show that the viscosity of the slurry comprising fine grain with a size<0.1mm is varied with the difference in electrolyte concentration, ionic bond and pH value. All these affect the formation and movement of viscous debris flow in certain degree.
