AbstractFlow regimes of debris flow are mainly determined by the debris content in debris flow and the nature of slurry besdies the conditions of gully bed. Slurry is power-law fluid with yield value, and most of the slurris belong to Bingham fluid. The flow regimes in slurry can be classified into four: plug flow, laminar flow, transitional flow and turbulent flow. They can be distinguished by Reynolds number of slurry. For example, the Reynolds number from to transitional flow is 2400-3200. Note: the effective viscosity should be used when culculating it. Flow regimes in debris flow are relatively close to the ones in its slurry. But the differences between them will gradually grow with the increase of debris content. Debris flow is pseudo-power-law fliud with yield value, and most of it belong to Bingham fluid. The flow regimes in it can be divided into sliding flow, creeping flow, disturbing flow and turbulent flow. Sometimes waving flow may appear, too. There are different resistance laws and velocity formulae becaues of vairous flow regimes of debris flow. Therefore, formulae for the velocity of debris flow can be grouped into four according to flow regimes. Among them, the formula for the velocity of turbulent flow is close to the one for the velocity of turbulent flow of Newtonin fluid; the formula for the velocity of dreeping flow is similar to the one for the velocity of laminar flow of Bingham fluid; disturing flow and sliding flow are pecullar to debris flow, and the structure of their velocity formulae is more complicated.
