Abstract | A silt-trap dam is construction to regularize the water course of mountain stream which has a long history. It prevents the bed from being washed, and creates a silt depot which raises the river bed, that not only increases the stability of valley walls but aslo forms a utilizable head of water. Its main functions in preventing and controlling debris flows are as listed below: (1) to stop debris flows; (2) to stabilize valley wall landslides; (3) to prevent the gully from erosion, and to reduce sources of loose material causing debris flows; (4) to preotect the foundations of bridges over a debris flow ravine from bing washed; (5) to regularize the water courses in a fan of debris flow ravines; (6) to stop the mining and industrial waste and prevent man-made debris flow; (7) to prtect canals across ravines from damage caused by debris flows; (8) to raise head of water, that may not only stop a debris flow, but also make water resources utilizable; (9) to create fileds with debris flow silt; (10) to make synthetical use. Under certain conditions, many of the above functions may often exist in one silt-trap dam at the same time. |
