AbstractDebris flow hazards on main highways of Sino-Nepal and Sichuan-Tibet in the southern part of Tibet are very common. There are a total of 1848 debris flow sites on both highways. There are glacier and rainfall related debris flows. The debris flows are generally characterized by alternation of intensity, low clay composition with high density, high magnitude together with low frequency and small magnitude together with high frequency, occurrences in groups, concentration or occasional triggering. The strategy of hazards mitigation must be taken. Firstly, take every necessary step to determine the traffic line; secondly, take effective measures including engineering and bio-control measures. From 25 research sites, the sites located at K4980 and K4981 on Sino-Nepal highway are chosen for case study. And the strategy of controlling debris flows is successfully applied at the case-study sites.
