AbstractIn Hunshui Gully with a basin area of 4.5 km(2) debris flows recurred about 50 times and transported about 1.6 x 10(6) t sediment into Dayingjiang River every year before 1978. The main factor of high-frequency debris flows is the large number of landslides which can provide 6.23 x 10(7) t material in the gully. In order to control the debris flow, 6 silt-trap dams and supplementary structures were built. Because 4.5 x 10(6) m(3) of sediment was captured in the reservoir behind the silt-trap dams, 4/5 of the landslides have been stabilized and the activities of most of the rest landslides have been declined, debris flows have been reduced largely. By 2000, the control works will be completed in Hunshui Gully.
