Abstract  Dams, as the line of defense against debris flow, play an important role in reducing the damage of debris flow, but they are often partial or complete failure due to the impact of massive stones. In this paper, with the finite element analysis software ABAQUS, A three-dimensional numerical model of the dam and the large stone is established. The impact pressure of the dam contact surface is increasing with the impact velocity of massive stones increasing and a qualitative understanding of impact force (normal impact force and tangential impact force) with the time and the change of the massive stone impact velocity are obtained by the numerical simulation on the basis of the single variable theory and Drucker-Prager constitutive. The research provides some theoretical guidance for the optimization of the dam’s structural design and strengthening prevention project of debris flow.
